Course Summary Glossary
Progress 8 section
- Pupils: The number of pupils with an entry in this subject who are included in the Progress 8 measure / included in the progress measures shown in this tool. Only pupils with prior attainment/KS2 data are included.
- KS2 APS: The average Key Stage 2 points score for pupils with an entry in this subject.
- P8 Score: The Progress 8 score for pupils with an entry in this subject only. Based on their Attainment 8/best 8 grades, as per the Progress 8 tool, and may not necessarily include all/any of the grades in the selected subject. Another way to explain this is to think of applying a pupil filter to the main Progress 8 tool which happens to consist of the pupils with an entry in this subject only. The Progress 8 score reported here will use the Adjusted Progress 8 score, if any pupils are affected by the 'outliers' calculation.
Subject Section
- P8 Score: 4Matrix-devised measure that generates an estimated points score per pupil, per subject, based on prior attainment and national P8 ‘Basket’ estimates. The score is the difference between the estimated and actual score in the selected subject. Please contact us if you require more details about how this is calculated.
Attainment Section
- Summary A8 Score: The Attainment 8 score for pupils with an entry in this subject only. Based on their best 8 grades as per the Progress 8 tool, and may not necessarily include all/any of the grades in the selected subject.
- Subject APS: The selected subject's average points score, based on all entries in the subject, ignoring subject/pathway discounting rules.
Performance Section
-
Residual: The average of the distance between each pupil's grade and their overall average grade, reported in points. Also calculated for groups and subjects. In GCSE subjects, a residual of +1 means that, on average, pupils are working 1 grade higher in this subject compared to their average grade. Visual representation can be found in the Subject Profile tool.
-
Distribution: The same calculation as the Residual except that whether the distance is positive or negative isn’t considered. The higher the number, the bigger the spread of the results. Visual representation can be found in the Subject Profile tool.
-
Sex Diff: The difference in average point score between males and females. Blue indicates males have a higher APS (the score is by how much); pink indicates females have a higher APS. In 4Matrix Cloud, the score is always reported as a positive.
-
Subject Value Added (SVA): At key stage 4, SVA is a 4Matrix-devised measure that generates an estimated points score per pupil, per subject, based on prior attainment. The estimates are derived from the DfE’s national subject transition matrices. The SVA score is the difference between the estimated and actual score in the selected subject. Visual representation can be found in the Subject VA tool.
